Hailing from Edinburgh, United Kingdom is Electro-Rock artist, The Little Green Man. The instru: recordings artist is looking to make a lot of noise with his new video/single “Home”. While the song is hot, the video is definitely in need of some work. Here’s my official $.02
The Good: I really dig the dreamy vibe of the music. The drums hit harder than Prince Fielder at bat and the synths rest almost perfectly among them. It reminds me of something I’d hear in a feature film. I gotta give props to Dave Mitchell for the animation. I’m sure that it took a lot of time to come up with this fast-paced musical montage (which happens to be dedicated to The Little Green Man’s hometown). It has a creative, artsy flair to it and for some viewers that’ll be well worth the price of admission.
The Bad: I had no clue what I was looking at the first time I watched this video. It took me four more views to make somewhat of a connection. On top of that, it was way too long (six minutes in duration). You don’t get a clue about the concept until about halfway through. By that time most viewers will be off to the next video. And I’m not going to sugar coat it, that’s a half hour of my life that I won’t get back. As a Graphics guy I can see the man hours logged to create this video and I respect that. But this looks more like an advanced AfterEffects project than an actual music video.
Overall: The song is what saves this video. I was satisfied audibly, but unimpressed with the visuals. My advice to you, Little Green Man, is to take more time developing the storyline for your next video. Make it easy for people to understand what your point is. You’ve got loads of potential and it’s time for you to develop, perfect, and display it.
That’s my $.02…. What’s yours?
