POS: Good, solid Rock song, Great visuals
NEG: Sad ending, dark vibe, Song nondescript from the music of other bands in the same genre
What a creepy video for Rock band The Audiotapes’ “Cult of Survival”! This vid left me feeling quite disturbed at its end. While the song was really enjoyable and the visuals great, the story-line was more scary than enjoyable. If creepy stories are your thing, this is the vid for you!
The video starts out with a young woman tied to a tree in the woods. She somehow escapes and takes off running for her life. You find yourself rooting for this woman to make it out alive. The Audiotapes band members are also shown in the woods, hanging out by the lake with breathtaking views of the mountains, building a fire, drinking, playing the guitar, and just chillin’. You hope that these are the same woods that the young woman is running through, and hope that she can be helped by these band members to escape her tormentor, who we see following after her carrying a deadly knife. The music really immerses you in the story– the guitars, the earnest vocals, and the overall vibe grabs your attention and makes you interested in what’s happening in the video. Even though the song sounds the same as a thousand other Rock/Alt bands, it’s still a good song and complements the visuals in just the right way. At the end of the vid, you feel relief as the woman runs right into the band members’ camp site. Yay, she has been saved! Or maybe not….. It ends with the band sharpening their knives and hatchets, menacingly coming towards the young woman….. So it seems that they are the bad guys!
The Audiotapes are a talented band with lots of potential. Their music is good, although nothing really sets it apart from the music of other similar style bands. Director Nikolai Volkov did an excellent job in creating a creepy, dark video. I was just disappointed that the woman in the video didn’t meet a better fate! This is is an absolute “must see”.
