Catchy lyrics, attention-grabbing and relatable visuals
Weird blue lipstick worn in the beginning of vid, scatting technique feels out of step with the rest of the song
Serbian born Sofija Knezevic’s video for her song “Lipstick” is a very colorful and empowering visual experience. It’s a song about one of the few things that all women have worn at one time in their lives– lip color. Just as there are many colors of lipstick, we see different colors and types of women throughout the video which makes the song and the visuals attention-grabbing and relatable.
Lipstick is a very jazzy, cute song that works well with Knezevic’s vocal style. She isn’t the world’s best singer, but for this type of song it doesn’t matter. Her smooth mellow voice and simple lyrics make it very easy to listen to. She sings the line “When I put on my (insert a color) lipstick/ I sing,” which is catchy, easy to remember, and easy to sing along to. As the music plays, we see very colorful scenes with all types of women wearing interesting colors of lipstick. But I do have to say, the dark blue lipstick that Knezevic wears in the beginning of the vid is a bit too creepy. And the scatting that she throws in there in the middle of the song sounds out of place. It’s a great jazz singing technique, but it just doesn’t fit with the overall tone of the song. But despite those slight missteps, the song is appealing, catchy, and sticks in your head. And the video is eye-catching, colorful, and complements the song perfectly.
“Lipstick” is a video that reminds women that no matter what color, shape, or size they come in, we are all basically the same. When we want to feel sexy, or confident, or just need a little pick-me-up, lipstick is there to save the day. And no matter what happens or where our lives take us, we all put our lipstick on one shade at a time!
