Check out the comedic sounds of New Zealand’s own Bang Bang Clan
Twelve year old boys who think “Jizz in My Pants” is a musical masterpiece might enjoy the band Bang Bang Clang. Hailing from New Zealand, the Hip Hop/Comedy band brings us their own interpretation of The Lonely Island. Their ambition is to be admired, but unfortunately they miss the mark. While not terrible, the music becomes monotonous and just isn’t all that funny.
“Gibberish” is a song with a decent beat that is a little outdated. The rapping is ok, but the New Zealand accent is very prominent, which is a bit distracting. Unfortunately for the listener, the song becomes boring after the first couple of minutes. Next is an ode to the sticky icky: “Big Fish.” It starts out with the sound of someone smoking, and segues into rapid-fire rapping. Again, the rapping is decent, but the accent makes it hard to understand what is being said a lot of the time. But what is clear is the lyrics about the joys of toking on some Mary Jane. And the beat is catchy and stays on the brain. The last song– “Man You Make”– doesn’t bring anything new to the table. It sounds too similar to the other songs, and becomes tedious to listen to after a while.
Bang Bang Clang tries too hard to be funny and edgy and comes up short. The beats are decent, and the rapping skills are average, but something more is needed. They need to bring something that hasn’t been done before to their audience– something humorous that will keep listeners’ attention. The whole part of the band’s shtick is to not take them too seriously and to purposely be a little cheesy. But alongside this cheese needs to be some substance. Once Bang Bang Clang figures out how to incorporate humorous, interesting subject matter into their music, they have the potential to become more mainstream.
