Mustafa Captain Soulstar
Phenomenal vocals and instrumentation
Visuals weren't stimulating
Man I just received the new video “WOOO” from Mustafa Captain Soulstar and my first reaction is WOW! This guy has some serious chops! DC has always been a known epicenter for groundbreaking music and Mustafa solidifies that thought. WOOO is a bold, eccentric work of art that hits all of the sensual buttons. His unique blend of Funk and Neo-Soul is fierce and leaves a memorable impression on your musical psyche.
Mustafa has that old-soul voice; crackling and shifting through octaves with no regard for conventional singing methods. He kind of reminds me of a young Prince the way he pours his soul into this record. Now before you go claiming blasphemy, give Mustafa a good hard listen. He may not have the dynamic vocal range as The Purple One, but he uses similar unorthodox methods to deliver raw power in each note. The production was sick! You can easily get lost between those mesmerizing strings, kicks and rimshots. The music flowed so smoothly and seamlessly together, like a well-oiled machine at its optimal performance.
Where do I start with the visuals? Although I appreciate the slick editing, it was merely an afterthought. I know that performance based videos don’t have a lot going on by design, but most have a decent variety of shots to hold your attention. Unfortunately, this one had little variance. Honestly, had the record and the leading lady not been hot this video would have been a snooze fest. I say that not as a diss, but as an honest critique. My advice, switch it up a bit. We consumers like variety. Give us more than just a cool Instagram filter-like visual experience. Give us intensity. Give us excitement. Give us anything more than just cutaways from the same three sequences. That will catapult your next video into the limelight because the talent is obviously there. All you have to do is refine it.
Like previously stated, this song is straight bananas. It’s lively, lusty, and laden with multitudes of vibrant sounds. I’d give Mustafa a perfect score if I was basing my review solely on the record, but that’s not the case. I’m compelled to shave some points off the video. Shortcomings aside, this is well worth checking out. Check out the video in its entirety, and then follow him on Twitter to keep up with his latest news and releases. You can thank me later!
