he Aussie band Monks of Mellonwah is an Indie Rock/Alternative group that have been receiving critical praise of late for their unique sound and creative blends of musical styles. Made up of band members Joe de la Hoyde, John de la Hoyde, Josh Baissari, and William Maher; this band shows lots of promise. The songs on their latest EP, Neurogenesis, are catchy, emotional, and very radio friendly. It’s inevitable that we will be hearing a lot more from these guys, and that is a very good thing.

“Neverending Spirit” starts out with a lone guitar, and then suddenly the drums explode into the catchy melody, which is followed by the lead singer’s mellow voice. It all blends together into an intriguing, very radio friendly rock song. The guitar playing is superb, and the tune memorable. “Neurogenesis” is a slow-tempo song with a slinky, dark mood and spot on guitar and drums. Again, the lead singer has a nice mellow timber to his voice, with a slight raspy element to it that really conveys the emotion of the lyrics and the music. He sings of a lover running off to California, leaving behind the person who gave his heart completely to the relationship and is left behind to pick up the pieces. The hurt and raw, naked emotion is clear in all elements of the song, and allows listeners to become immersed in it. A funkier offering by the band is “Swamp Grove.” It starts out with a bluesy guitar; the lead singer’s voice is a perfect complement to the backing instrumentation. The track is comparable to Maroon 5′s style of music, and the Monks pull it off successfully. It’s catchy, pleasing to the ear, memorable. The guitar playing is phenomenal and adds a special touch to the song as a whole. The band’s talent is at its most evident on this particular song, and is proof that The Monks have great potential.

The Monks of Mellonwah is a band made up of very talented musicians, and their style of Rock/Funk/Alternative is tight. There is only one direction this band’s career can go, and that is up. The music is great to listen to and stays in the listener’s mind well beyond listening to it. It’s only a matter of time before The Monks’ music is heard all over the radio, worldwide!
