Detroit rapper Mr. J dropped that new hotness, “Friends Become Lovers”, one of many slammin singles off his D-Riot Invasion mixtape. I swear I can’t stop nodding my head to it. The beat… sick. The rhymes… bananas. The hook… mesmerizing. This record has crazy potential. All it needs a solid promo team behind it for it to make some noise in the mainstream. This song is so necessary for Hip-Hop right now. There are a lot of records in heavy rotation that ooze misogyny and Mr. J provides some much needed balance that evens out the playing field.
As the title would imply, the song is about, you guessed it, friends becoming lovers. But contrary to other odes that promote smashing your bestie, this record talks more about realizing how moving out of the friend zone and into the bed zone can sometimes be a costly mistake. Mr. J paints a perfect picture with simplistically poignant lyrics over a bed of Dilla-esque production that bangs hard. Mr. J enlisted the superior vocal presence of crooner Trey Gandy for the hook which will stick to you like that government peanut butter does the roof of your mouth. This is that “take your time and cultivate it properly” Hip-Hop that The D is known for.
Mr. J and Trey Gandy composed a bona fide earworm with this record. The combination of J’s ill flow, Gandy’s smooth voice, a neck spasming beat and a concept that is relatable and easy to digest makes this a record that will transcend time and audiences. You definitely want to bless your ears with this record. Simply press play and enjoy the sounds. You can thank me later. Get up with on Facebook.
