Hard Rock/Metal band War on Hollywood is coming out with all guns blazing on their self-titled album. A retro sound and hard-rocking guitars are here to assault both the mind and the ears. Dust off the stone-washed jeans and mullet and be prepared to be taken back to the days of the 80’s hair bands!
“Sea of Death” is a slow, somber song with great guitars and a hard sound. The vocals are not that great but work for this type of music– the guttural edge to the vocals works well with the bite of the thrashing guitars. “What’s the Use,” is another slower-tempo song with awesome guitars and drums. Unfortunately, the lead singer sings in a high-pitched Axl Rose type style, which only brings attention to the not so great qualities of his voice. The off-key singing is hard to miss in this high range. The saving grace in this song is the guitar playing . There is obvious talent there, and this skill grabs the listener’s attention and takes them to hair-band heaven. Its Megadeth redux on “You Make Me Smile,” another good 80’s throwback metal song. This song is faster than the other two, with a more catch elody. Again, the guitars are awesome, and the old-school feel is out in force. The vocals are still off-key, but despite being slightly distracting, the thrashing guitars cover it up and the great guitar solo is the middle of the song. And if you think about it, very few singer’s in 80’s hair bands had very good singing voices. So listener’s can be a little forgiving if the vocals are not that great on this song.
War on Hollywood is a band with its hand on the pulse of nostalgic 80’s music. Their sound brings you back to the days of hairspray, spandex, and a unique style of metal. So hop in your souped-up Camaro and blast the sounds of this band and be taken back to the good old days!
