I just checked out budding Pop star Lola Rangel’s video for her latest single “Sometimes” and I was pleased but far from impressed. The song is dope and Rangel’s voice is lovely, but I would have loved to be a fly on the wall during the pre-production meetings for this vid. The meeting probably lasted 30 seconds and went something like this:
Alright guys let’s make a video. Dope Dance track? Check. Beautiful scantily clad curvy chic? Check. Green screen? Check. Gratuitous AfterEffects plugin usage? Check. Looks like we’ve got a winner. Go Team!
Not so fast team. You’ve got real people to keep entertained. While there are folks who will watch this video, they will probably end up staying glued to the screen for two reasons:
- The music is really good and Rangel has a really nice singing voice
- She’s quite attractive in that petite outfit
I’ll give the director his props for that and that only. Otherwise it looks like Gloria Estefan B-Roll footage from the 90s. The director’s job is to tell the story and keep us fully engaged. Do that next time and you’ll have and keep our undivided attention. On a higher note, Rangel has a lot of mainstream appeal and has the potential to nab a spot on the dance charts with music like this. Put as much efforts into your visuals as you do into your sound and you’re sure to be the next best thing.
That’s my official $.02. What’s yours?
