Great visuals, catchy song
Overuse of death growls and screaming
This disturbing video by Hard Rock/Metal band Led By the Blind is both compelling and ominous at the same time. The visuals are cool– the flying doors straight out of a Harry Potter movie and the steam punk aesthetics are catching to the eye and keep your attention. The mysterious figure with the lantern piques your curiosity and makes you want to stick around to the end to see what the lantern is all about. The ending leaves you wanting more– was all of it a dream? And what is that mark on the back of the guy’s neck at the end? This leaves room for an encore in the band’s next music video.
One thing that was annoying about this particular video was not the visuals, but the music itself. The song was pretty catchy in the beginning, when the vocalist was singing in a normal voice. But then when the death metal demonic screams in the chorus took over, it became grating pretty quickly. Although this style of “singing” is crucial in death metal music, this song could have done with a little less of the screaming and a little more of just plain vocalization. The vocalist has a pretty good singing voice, but we don’t get to hear much of it due to the overuse of the death growl technique. But despite this, the overall experience was a positive and interesting one.
