Broadway voice does not match Pop/Indie style music
Laura Stavinoha is bursting on the scene from Amsterdam with her latest LP “Sweet Life.” She mixes her classically trained voice with Pop/Indie/Soul sounds to create an interesting sound that’s all her own. Reminiscent of artists such as Tori Amos and Kate Bush, her music is something to listen to with an open mind. Not a cookie-cutter artist, Stavinoha brings unique ideas to the table, and her music is something that you haven’t quite heard before.
“Rise and Fall” is a quirky little song with lots of piano and catchy lyrics. It’s cutesy and kitschy, but unfortunately it sounds like a song that should be sung by someone else other than Stavinoha. Her voice is very powerful and strong, but sounds like it belongs in a Broadway play or a Disney movie. She sings almost like an opera singer– which would work well in a stage show or in an animated film as a Disney princess singing about her prince. It just does not work with the composition of the song– someone like Lisa Loeb or Zooey Deschanel would be better off singing this type of song. “Sweet Life” is a slower song, with Stavinoha singing a bit off-key. The mixture of the violin, drums, and oboe create an almost dream-like feel which is pleasing to the ear. But the great instrumentation is, unfortunately, ruined by the off-key singing which is a shame. On “Wishful Thinking,” the jazzy piano playing is awesome and the song isn’t all that bad. But again, the Disney princess quality distracts away from the music and becomes annoying after a few minutes. The song would work better with a more toned-down singing voice.
Laura Stavinoha has a unique sound that isn’t like anything out there right now. She has an interesting mix of musical elements in her songs. But her voice is one that belongs on a Broadway stage or in an animated musical film, not in pop music. Although her songs are creative and have nice qualities to listen to, her voice does not match the concepts of these types of songs. Perhaps Stavinoha should record an album of show tunes…….
