Jakk Jo– “Black Da Vinci”
Song has a powerful message, scenes in the video show the reality and harshness of what is going on in the country
May be a little too emotional or disturbing to some
Jakk Jo’s vid for his song “Black Da Vinci” has arrived at the right time. With all the media attention to police officers and black suspects getting hurt or killed while in police custody, this song and this vid hits just the right cord. With emotional lyrics and disturbing scenes, “Black Da Vinci” stays with you long after it ends.
Jakk Jo is a very talented rapper with skills reminiscent of a young Kanye West. He rhymes with real heart and emotion, and you can tell he really feels the story he is conveying through his lyrics. In the song, Jakk raps against a haunting beat. We see Jakk standing in front of a city skyline as he raps, wearing a “Black Lives Matter” sweatshirt. He speaks of black men dying for all the wrong reasons; slavery, racism, and even issues such as AIDS which has had a big impact on the black community. As we hear all of these issues, we see scenes of unarmed Walter Scott being shot in the back by police officer Michael Slager as he runs away, and various other scenes of black men being shot at or beaten by the hands of law enforcement. This all feels very real and deep since this is all we have been seeing in the news– Baltimore being the most recent. Everything comes together in this video– the haunting beat of the song, the message of Jo’s lyrics, and the scenes of these horrific acts. It leaves you feeling shocked and sad and really speaks to you on a deeper level.
