A lot can be said about Funky DL ( @FunkyDLHipHop ). The UK mc/producer’s tracks have a jazzy feel reminiscent of Soul Brother #1 Pete Rock. His use of historic production methods like bass line filtering and 16 level manipulating forces the listener to infinitely not their head. He’s no rookie in the game as debut, “Classic was the Day”, is an underground favorite within his region. He’s toured a few countries and opened for several big name artists like Eminem. His tracks are constructed with many layers of instrumentation without the sound clashing. The sound is updated using the same formulas of greatness.
Funky DL combines a variety of loops from many genres of music. The ensemble of keys, strings, horns, and basslines mesh well together without sounding cluttered. He reconstructs his “Classic was the day” debut’s instrumentals while not losing the soul it had displayed. On “Off Key”, he uses the 16 levels function while triggering a gritty SP 1200 sounding sample. Horn stabs are present in the backdrop to complete the soundscape. “Soul silhouette” is a standout tack on the instrumental album. A legendary drum loop stacked with a filtered bassline and horns. The guitar gives the track a Latin feel that’s smooth and rugged at the same time.
While being able to conjure up the spirit of 1997 with the reworking of the instrumentals from “Classic was the day”, Funky DL will continue to be around for a bit. He’s able to be productive while updating his sound. The year 2014 will bring us a new album from the producer/mc extraordinaire that he’s doing with a kickstarter campaign. Fans will have a chance to contribute to making the album and receive things like album credits and autographed material for their contributions. 2014 will be a great year for the Funky one.
