Dead River Runs Dry – Hierophants of the Storm
Dead River Runs Dry
Australian Death Metal band, Dead River Runs Dry, has released their newest EP Hierophants of the Storm. Loud, punishing, twisted, and dark, this band knows what it takes to create a disturbed masterpiece of hardcore black metal. Although this style of music is an acquired taste, one can still appreciate the band’s expert representation of the genre.
On the track “Only Skies Remain,” the loud, thrashing guitar pull you in, while the demonic growls and screams of the vocalist gets your adrenaline going. More of the same can be heard on songs such as “Stormreaper” and “Medicio de la Peste Negre.” Both songs contain the same thrashing guitars and guttural screams. “Stormreaper” is a more up-tempo song with a very dark and moody feel, while “Medicio” starts out with a long drawn out scream that curdles the blood and the lyrics are easier to make out in this one. But these songs and the others on the EP run into the danger of all sounding the same. The similarities could be detrimental; the listener could easily become bored and stop listening to the EP. But this can be remedied by shaking things up a little to avoid monotony. My one criticism would be to have a more of a variety, and to allow more songs to stand apart from one another.
Dead River Runs Dry has a firm grip on what makes good Death Metal music. All of the ingredients key to the genre are present on their EP. The only thing the band might do to improve on their music is to give each song its own uniqueness so that they don’t all sound too similar. With this one improvement, the band has the opportunity to become more mainstream and known to Death Metal fans all around the world!
