The song is lacking a clear concept
Lagos born, Boston bred emcee EK is a hybrid of sorts. His music spans multiple genres; each one seamlessly converges into another to make interesting works of art. His latest amalgamation of sound is the Pop/Hip-Hop mashup “Nightmares of the Kennedys”. The song is built on the solid foundation of great instrumentation, sound lyrics and EK’s airtight delivery.
The sounds of a pitch-shifted vocal sample layered over a bed of light, sleepy percussion sets the tone of the song right off the bat making you eager to hear what’s next on deck. Twelve bars later kicks and snares usher themselves into the ensemble and dance lively with the contagious rhythm. The instrumentation continues to form a pleasurable loop until about 02:15, that’s when a nice guitar solo enters the stage and plays throughout the remainder of the record. That coupled with the synthesized keys make for a decent outro. The Bueffard Mallary produced instrumental is good by itself, however it is the vocal prowess of EK that takes this record from good to great. His voice is crisp; his mid-pitched nasal tenor is as brazen as his wordplay. His slow-and-steady delivery adds to the likeability of the song, for you don’t have to contemplate heavily on the points that EK is making. Put all of that together and the result is a solid Pop/Hip-Hop record.
EK is one of those artists who touches on an array of topics and Nightmares of the Kennedys adds to his vast spectrum of discussion points. While this song is not the most cerebral song, it is one that will easily get stuck in your head.
