Cesar Green is good, but is he good enough for JoyRyder?
Rapper Cesar Green’s “Peace Sign” is a statement song with the visuals to back it up. Green has created a good song that many can relate to. People who have grown up in this era of hard times and a bad economy will understand what message Green is trying to portray through his lyrics. The video is simple yet effective, even though I think he could have done a little more to make the video even better.
Green has a sharp delivery and tone of voice, which is complemented by an appealing beat. The chorus “Put your peace sign up, put your peace sign up” will stick in your head also. The Occupy Wall Street visuals go along with the lyrics perfectly. I just wish we could actually see more of Green– he seems to be hidden in the shadows for the majority of the video. I suppose he could have done this on purpose– instead of focusing on him we are forced to pay better attention to the music and to the message of the song, which in itself is an effective technique. The use of the American flag at the beginning and end of the vid has a huge impact. But where Green stumbles is with how much he emphasizes the Occupy movement– previous “social commentary” songs in the past have focused on big time events that had a huge impact on history. Although Occupy Wall Street was in the news and a lot of people participated, it wasn’t really a large-scale event that was as history altering as events such as the Vietnam protests or the Civil Rights Movement. It just seems as though Green puts too much importance on this one event, and the sound of the song tries too hard to sound like a Kanye West anthemic song. But despite these slight missteps, the song and video are still decent.
Cesar Green’s “Peace Sign” is a commentary song with the perfect visuals to go along with it. The scenes are effective and hit home. My only problems are the fact that 1., Green tries too hard to sound like Yeezy; and 2., the song/video is not really as effective as other commentary songs. But despite that, it is still an enjoyable video to watch! So check it out, then leave us a comment and tell us how you feel about it!
