The Bonsais – Colour Speak
Great catchy, radio friendly songs in the vein of Coldplay
A lot of the songs sounding too much like one another
Kelowna, British Colombia band The Bonsais is a talented group with great music that mixes Funk, Blues, Indie, and Pop with good old fashioned Rock & Roll on their release Colour Speak. The records are good, catchy, and work well in the mainstream. One thing the band needs to be careful of is the similarities of their records. Variety is the spice of life and more of a mix of styles would work well for the band and would allow them to showcase their versatility.
The song “Paper Cups” is a catchy, radio friendly affair with a Pop/Indie sound that is pleasing to the ear. The lead singer’s raspy vocals work well here and the guitars are on point. The oohs and aaahs in the chorus are unique and catchy. “WDYG” is a song with a darker, melancholy feel to it. Again, the guitars are on point and the vocals spot on. This song has a harder, more Rock edge to it and is easy to sing along to. It brings to minds music from bands such as Coldplay or U2. “Hanger” is another harder sounding song. It’s good but sounds a lot like the last song discussed. A lot of the other songs on the EP run into this issue– they sound a lot alike and start to run in to each other. The Bonsais need to mix it up, adding in more songs like the first or like one other song “Sailing,” which is more upbeat, sunny, and very catchy. With more upbeat songs mixed in with the slower songs, this will break up the monotony more and will keep listeners attention.
The Bonsais is a band with obvious talent. The songs on Colour Speak are a good mix of Rock with elements from other types of music such as Indie or Pop. The vocals are great; the backing music on point, and the songs would do well on the radio. The songs are also perfect as a soundtrack to the latest Indie rom-com! The only thing the band needs to work on is diversifying its sound. Breaking up the similarities and mixing things up more will bring this talented band to the next level!
