Archives- Reviews: Home Jones
Phoenix, AZ has been the host to a variety of All-Stars to include Kurt Warner, Shaquielle O’Neal and Randy Johnson. The Valley of the Sun is prepared to unleash its latest team of All-Stars; the electrifying Nu Jazz/Soul ensemble Home Jones. Home Jones’s ability to coalesce elements of Jazz, Soul, Hip-Hop and R&B creates a harmonious explosion of musical bliss for listeners to vibe to. Home Jones is: James Przewlocki (DJ), Rich Kniss (bass), Kevan Nymeyer (strings), Danielle Cook (keys), Keven Peart (alto sax), Jeff Gutierrez (tenor sax), Joe Goglia (drums), and Jeff Holden (vocals). On their latest LP, “Home Jones Live @ Phase 54”, this All-Star cast of musicians takes music to new heights with their alluring lyrical abilities and dulcet rhythms.
Home Jones Live @ Phase 54 unveils a smorgasbord of musical treats which includes the laid-back smooth groove “Same Time”. The track’s premise illustrates how adverse situations can negatively impact one’s advancement in life. Rather than succumbing at the sight of calamity, Home Jones looks adversity in the eyes and perseveres. Lead vocalist Jeff Holden displays his opulent vocal abilities by singing: It seems like whenever I used to/In the past look to the future/The present would pass me by/Leave me here, wondering why… I find my way/And I lose it at the same time/Sometimes I feel/Like leaving it all behind.” The horn section’s statuesque sounds compliment Holden’s energetic voice as the strings and keys intertwine with the radiant rim shot. Contrary to the tracks melancholy subject matter, this song is a magnificent piece.
Home Jones continues their all-star efforts with the up-tempo percussion heavy hitter “Follow Me”. The stellar vocal and instrumental sequences blend smoothly, leaving the listener jonesing for more. The solos toward the end of the song showcase the individual abilities of these gifted performers. The drums are in full effect as Joe Goglia wails on the skins like Ike did Tina. Danielle Cook proves to be the top chef as she expertly tickles the ivory. Saxophonists Keven Peart and Jeff Gutierrez breathe fire into the track with their mellifluous melodies. Kevan Nymeyer commands the strings as Rich Kniss provides the infectious bass grove from start to finish.
The excitement continues on the fast-paced, love infused “Hold Me”. Heads will nod from the opening horn and drum riffs all the way to the closing moments. Jeff Holden, who consistently thrusts his heart and soul into each track, comes through again with his powerful crooning skills; adding an R&B feel to this jazzy track. The high hat’s authoritative presence dictates the velocity of the track while powerful horn, string and piano riffs paint the song with vivid colors. This track could easily be a Top 40 hit.
Many All-Stars have left their mark in the Sonoran Desert, but none will leave a mark like the All-Star cast of Home Jones. These eclectic musicians continue to make feel-good music for the soul. As the Valley of the Sun continues to rise as a musical powerhouse, music lovers can rest assured that Home Jones will be at the forefront leading the charge in Phoenix’s musical progression.
