60 East – “Grateful”
Be grateful for what you have!
The vid for 60 East’s Rap song “Grateful” is simple, but gets the point across in a nice unassuming way. Director Wackoe really played the visuals against the lyrics nicely, without going overboard or really sinking into a hole of clichés. Don’t get me wrong– there are plenty of clichés in this vid– but it was done in such a charming, downplayed way that it doesn’t get too offensive or eye-rolling.
The video begins and ends with scenes of 60 East sitting around with friends and family at his birthday party. I liked how this was done, giving the video an introduction then a closure. We see 60 East riding in a private jet and nice cars, and scenes of him surrounded by pretty women and cash being thrown around as he raps about being grateful for all that he has. He is thankful for his career and the successes in life and thankful of where he came from. Although the scenes are clichés, they are not over the top. And the message he is conveying is what really matters– he appreciates that he is able to enjoy private jets and money and doesn’t take it for granted. The song has a decent beat (kind of a gospel-tinged Hip Hop sound) and 60 East is decent rapper– he has the skills but his voice is a little high-pitched and just a tad distracting. But despite this, it is still a nice Rap record. At the end of the vid, 60 East blows out his birthday candles and states that he doesn’t need to make a wish because he already has all that he needs in his life. It’s a fitting end– it’s apparent that he is content with his life and is so grateful for everything.
I enjoyed 60 East’s “Grateful” despite the passé scenes. Am I wrong to give this a pass? What do you think?
